Pregnancy

Although the actions of the essential oils on the body are well known, little research has been done on how much of the naturally occurring chemicals found in essential oils cross the placental line.  Therefore only a select few should be used when pregnant. Please do not use essential oils at all during the first trimester of the pregnancy.

Once you have passed into the second trimester some of the oils can be used in reduced dilutions for calming or uplifting purposes. Chamomile Roman, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Mandarin, Patchouli, Petitgrain, Rose, Sandalwood, and Ylang Ylang are all thought to be suitable oils. Once the pregnancy has reached term there are numerous oils to help you through the birth.

Asthma

As with all strong aromas, any essential oil can trigger an attack in a severe asthma sufferer. The following listed oils are thought to be safe to use, although it is up to the asthmatic to learn what triggers their attacks.

Considered safe: Chamomile RomanEucalyptusClary SageLavenderMandarinPeppermint and Petitgrain. Many of the oils are thought to help Asthma sufferers in a small way with their clearing ability.

Epilepsy

There is no conclusive evidence that essential oils can trigger epileptic convulsions.

A severe epileptic would be advised not to use some of the more stimulating oils such as Camphor, Peppermint and Rosemary. Research has shown that the use of relaxing oils can help reduce attacks.

Insomnia

Avoid using any stimulating oils, especially in the evening.

Blood Pressure

The relaxing effect of a massage is known to reduce high blood pressure and is said to regulate blood pressure rather than raise or lower it, but as a general guide the following oils should be avoided:

  • High Blood Pressure: Camphor, Cypress, Rosemary and Thyme.
  • Low Blood Pressure: Sweet Marjoram, Lavender.
